OLD-WORLD + SLEEK + MODERN
O’Connell Street, Dublin 1 – Retail

Clerys Department Store in Dublin is, arguably one of the finest department store buildings in the country. The brief was to extend and refurbish the existing Cosmetics Hall with the introduction of a new Jewellery Emporium. The concept relied heavily on opening up the O’Connell street vista and creating views from the street though the space while respecting and complementing the outstanding period architecture.
Possibly the most significant improvement to the space was the removal of the heavy timber entrance lobbies & closed window displays. These were replaced with frameless glass doors and open displays, creating views through from the street designed to encourage passers-by to come in and shop.
Meanwhile, the contrast between the old features, such as majestic columns & great ceiling height, are emphasised beautifully by the ultra-modern shop-fit to the interior. Great care was taken to work closely with each cosmetic house to ensure each brand achieved an elegant cohesive layout, that was both sympathetic to both the brand themselves and overall aesthetic of cosmetic hall.
As the cosmetic hall is the main artery to the rest of the store, traffic flow was carefully considered, this together with clever landscaping of the fixtures created an open, accessible and flexible design. With a new limestone floor and high quality finishes throughout, the entire cosmetic hall has released a new energy the flows not only through cosmetics but also to the surrounding departments, thus making a style statement worthy of such majestic building.
